Together We Will Build A Hospice

FAQ

Townsend Smith Foundation owns a 2.6 acre property with appropriate zoning at Trafalgar Road and 5 Sideroad, on the border between Halton Hills and Milton. We’re so excited!

What progress has TSF made in the last year?

We have secured our building property, and applied to the Ministry of Health for construction funds for a 10 bed residential hospice. So far the Ministry will partially fund 7 beds, and it is up to our community to raise the rest.

When will construction begin?

Funds permitting, we hope to break ground in 2024. TSF is organizing a Campaign Cabinet, including former Halton Hills Mayor Rick Bonnette, philanthropist Teresa Fujarczuk, and former MP Lisa Raitt, to launch a major capital campaign.

How much will a hospice building cost?

Hard to estimate in today’s climate. We will have a better idea when we have architectural drawings.

Does the government provide funding?

The Ministry of Health only funds a portion of the expenses to build and operate a hospice. Hospices in Ontario rely upon donations to fund site purchase, construction, operation staff (administrative, fundraising, executive director, etc.), utilities at the hospice, and providing meals for residents. Once built, the hospice will need to fundraise at least $1 million per year for operating funds.

The government currently provides $200,000 per allocated bed. The funding is meant to cover nursing and PSW costs. As we are planning a 7-10 bed hospice residence that amount will vary.

The Townsend Smith Foundation is extremely grateful for all donations, big or small: every dollar raised helps move this cause forward..

Will the current Hillcrest Church building remain?

That will be up to the architect. Unfortunately the building probably cannot remain intact, but elements may be re-used.

How will the Hillcrest Church congregation be accommodated?

The hospice will have a multi-purpose community room. Plans for its use will be pursued with Hillcrest as well as other groups. The hospice hopes to become a hub of the community while also providing a peaceful place for families and residents who are at end of life.

What about volunteers once the hospice is running?

Hospices do have paid administrative and care staff, but many tasks are fulfilled by volunteers. Ongoing fundraising, reception, food and refreshment provision, child minding, supporting families, sitting with residents, upkeep of outdoor areas…THE LIST IS ENDLESS.

Where does my donation to TSF go?

We try to keep our expenses minimal. Our audited financial statements are posted on the CRA website. Most of the organization’s work is done by volunteers, from the Directors on the Board to all Committee members. We are also supported by many businesses in North Halton who generously donate and sponsor our fundraising events! Thank you to everyone who is helping to build our hospice!!
